Back To School Tip – Making Friends At School

making friends

Making friends is not something that always comes naturally. Some kids have trouble reaching out and getting to know others. When those kids head back to school, they may become stressed or even depressed. As parents, there are some things you can do to help them out. It all begins with talking to your kids. Even kids that are social butterflies can learn a thing or two to improve their friendships. Here are some important tips to share:

Be willing to reach out to others

No friendship can develop in a world where we ignore one another. When you have a chance to say hello or introduce yourself, make sure you do so. Don’t be afraid to say hello and show an interest in making friendships. If you do this, you are covering the toughest part. Others are out there looking for friends just like you. Reach out!

Be there for people

Being there for people doesn’t mean allowing yourself to be taken advantage of. It does mean offering help to those that need it. A helping hand is a great way to begin a friendship and there are plenty of folks out there that need those. Anything you can do to make their day a bit better can be a great way to start a friendship. Be wary of those that only speak to you or hang out when you are doing something for them though. That is not a true friend.

Don’t judge

Many friendships are trashed before they ever even begin because of judgment. Take for example a kid that comes to school with dirty clothes. There is a good chance that they can’t help it. Perhaps their parents was unable to pay a bill and lost water service? All kinds of things happen to people and learning to not have a judgemental attitude can go a very long way. Friendships blossom well when you are loving and don’t treat people badly.

Join clubs and extra-curricular activities

Getting involved will virtually guarantee better odds of finding someone to call friend. If you stay reclusive and don’t join in the fun going on around you, why would anyone be tempted to become your friend? Give people the opening and you will be surprised at how many folks will embrace you as a friend.

Compliment others

A simple compliment can sometimes open the door to a long and lasting friendship. Find something nice to say to every person you come in contact with and you will never hurt for friends.

Befriend the “unfriendable”

Sadly every group of people has some that others will make fun of. They will be ridiculed and treated poorly, bullied and even made to feel like they are not worthy of friendship or love. Make close personal friends of those people and you will have some of the best friends in your life. Why not love the unloved? It is a wonderful thing to do.
