Even people who live in apartment complexes and have the smallest of yards are wanting to grow their own foods and save money. Very few people are lucky enough to have not only the space for huge crops, but the right sun exposure. Small space gardening can provide these folks with options to still get a nice yield.

Be sure to commit to fertilization
This is a huge tip for small space gardening because soil has to be that much better in a smaller garden. In a larger garden there is more room for error. The soil is more spread out and the nutrients are there. If you are planting in a planter or in a built box you might not have such nutrients naturally present. Use compost, manure and whatever fertilizer is recommended for your specific crop. Make sure your soil is optimized to give you the best crop.
Grow up and use vertical gardening
When you have a small amount of ground space, grow crops that will grow vertically and you will benefit in many different ways. Not only will your yield increase, but you will also be utilizing otherwise wasted space efficiently.
Explore the unusual spaces
Most people look at their yard and only think about the space that is obvious. What about around the mailbox area? What about alongside the house? What about beside the porch? Usually there are areas that can be utilized if you are willing to move outside the standard square plot that most people picture when they think of a garden. Many veggies and fruits are quite attractive during the growing process so plant some in visible areas.
Pick the food products that will give you more in less space
Some plants will simply grow like mad in a very small space. Most greens are this way as well as garlic, onions, radishes, cucumbers, tomatoes, squash, and anything else that might grow vertically. There are hundreds of good options so explore.
Grow stuff in containers indoors
Why do you need space outside anyway? You surely have a window that gets a ton of sun! If you have little to no space outside, simply grow some things inside in containers. This idea of container gardening is not nearly as tough as it sounds and you can grow most anything. If you have a seasonal situation, you can always start them indoors and then move them later when the weather is good for them.
