Thank you Disney for inviting me down to LA and hosting me for the Ant Man and the Wasp interview press junket.

Hannah John-Kamen On Being the Ghost In Ant Man and The Wasp – #Antmanandthewaspevent

We were all thrilled to in interview Hannah John-Kamen as “Ghost”! I have seen some of her work from Black Mirror, which I am a huge fun of. I however had never heard of the comic book character Ghost, so I was excited to dig in a learn a bit more.

How’d you get involved with the project?

Since she was new to the MCU, we wanted to ask her, “How’d you get involved with the project?”

“I auditioned. My agents called me and said, “Okay, this is a really cool character, It’s gonna be in the new Ant Man and the Wasp movie.” I’m a huge fan of the first one. I thought that Peyton Reed did such an incredible job, I absolutely loved it. I did an audition on tape, ’cause I was filming in Toronto at the time. Then I got a call saying they’d love to bring me in for a camera test.”
Hannah expressed how nervous as she was she had to remind herself to just stay cool and have fun , her motto, “If I don’t get this, that’s okay, because I had the best day ever.” Shortly after, she got a call saying she got this role. Her reaction…..“I think I screamed and danced to Miley Cyrus.”

So, how does it feel to join the Marvel family?

Now that she is official, we wanted to know how it felt to join the Marvel family? Her first reaction, “Oh, my goodness. It is amazing.” I think everyone can agree that being part of the Marvel family is one that many dream of. She also shared that it is a bit daunting and overwhelming, she stated that “It’s a huge responsibility“. One thing that was on her mind was “How to take this amazing character off the comic book page and be the first person to introduce it into an incredible movie with incredible cast members” which, you know, they’re heroes in life. Over all, her final words were ” So, yeah, it was amazing. Very exciting.”

On Ghost being a Female

We were very curios to get her thoughts on the character Ghost being a female in the movie. Originally she was just as surprised as us and had no idea that Ghost was a male character in the comic books until she googled her character to get more information. “I remember my agents then telling me, oh, yeah, yeah, it’s a man and they’re going a whole different way. I was like great.”

“So, to have a male character and be the first person to lift it off the page and give her life and make her a strong, badass woman is pretty amazing”

We couldn’t help but notice a softer side to the ghost, and there were definitely moments when we could really feel her true pain. So we had to ask, “So, you have this moment with Laurence Fishburne where you guys kind of have this reconciliation and it looks like Ghost is sort of turning this leaf and maybe heading towards more of a light place where she’s not quite as angry and maybe she’s been healed a little bit. Is there something that we can look for her in the future, like maybe a different role in Avengers movie?

She quickly replied with “I think everyone’s redeemable. I really do. I think Marvel does that genius job with the villainous characters to really not make it black and white. They make it gray. They make it kind of like you kinda feel sorry for them. You’re kind of on their side. You kind of confuse yourself as an audience member and go, hold on a minute. Why am I rooting for this person?”
“I approached the character as if she’s the good guy. And, through my eyes, she IS the good guy. And through the protagonist side, yes, okay, like she’s the bad guy. But through my mind, okay, no. She’s got a job, she’s got her objective. The stakes are really high. But ….. in the Marvel Universe anything’s possible.”

What’s it like just using the special effects in your imagination as you’re acting?

We have heard from many actors that working with CGI and the green screen is just a whole new level of acting, so we were wondering how it was for Hannna. We asked her, ” What’s it like just using the special effects in your imagination as you’re acting?”

“The imagination…. yeah, you gotta have one!! It’s really an amazing process, the fights and the green screen and everything. But I actually had that freedom to just play the scene, and I had the freedom to, do my own stunts.” “It’s like, all right, just do it and then they’ll do the rest later on.” “So, it didn’t restrict me as an actor”
We think it is pretty awesome that she did her own stunts, so we needed to know, “How was it doing your own stunts, how do you prepare for that?”
“Well, I’ve been doing my  own stunts in my career for a really long time. And I think it’s really important to do as much as you physically possibly can, because the character is yo.” “it’s what you bring to it, it’s not just emotional. It’s also physically, especially in this Marvel Universe. We all have different powers. We all have different styles of fighting. So, it’s important for you to bring yourself.”

What do you want young girls to walk away from when they see you in your character?

Since this is such a “girl power” movie, and I have 2 daughters myself, We wanted to know “What do you want young girls to walk away from when they see you in your character?
“I want them to come away and just basically go, yeah!  I want young girls to go, yeah, we can, we can be badass. And I want them to have our action figurines and, actually play with them and go –do you know what? I can be strong just like they are.”
