How to have a budget friendly Christmas

As the holiday season arrives, it is important than you recognize the beauty of simplicity. In the last few years it seems people have started decorating earlier and the amount of decorations have increased each year. Every year you are having to out do your self and the gifts seem to get bigger and more impressive despite your budget needing to be the same. This year, if you are trying to find a way to celebrate the holidays on a smaller budget, simplicity may well be your best discovery.

If you are facing the holiday season on a tight budget there are a few tips that can help ease your stress.

* Limit the size of your gift list. Keep in mind that many people are facing budget issues right now. Family and friends may welcome the opportunity to shorten their gift list also. You can arrange to have a family meal or a gathering of friends with no gift exchange involved and just enjoy the togetherness. Organize a potluck meal so that no one person or family bears the entire expense of the meal.

* If you have a situation with a sibling or friend where you buy gifts for them, their spouse, and their children consider a family gift rather than giving individual gifts. You could make a cake or some homemade bread for the whole family or give them a fruit or food basket that everyone can enjoy. Consider a membership, to the Children’s museum or the zoo. Additionally, sites like Groupon or Living social can have super fun activities that for a family like ice skating, or bowling. This will be less expensive than buying each person an individual gift.

* Within your immediate family arrange to keep gift giving to a small scale. It is important to remember that all gifts don’t have to come from a store. Offering your time or talent to a person can be a great gift. If you’re good at crafts or cooking, or have other artistic skills you can save money by making the gifts you give.

* When buying gifts take advantage of pre-season sales. Comparison shop.

* Wrap your own gifts or package the gifts in reusable containers or baskets.

* There is no need to break the budget to decorate your home. Everything gets hectic during the holiday season. You can save money and provide a peaceful retreat for yourself and your family by keeping the decorations in your home simple.

* You probably have an abundance of decorations stored in an attic, basement, garage, or storage building. Look through what you have. Use what you have instead of buying new decorations. You can carry the repurpose, renew, and revitalize concept over to your holiday decorating.

* Make your decorations this year. Take a nature walk and collect items such as pinecones, berries, and evergreen branches to use in your home.

* Enjoy the holidays at home. Spend time with your family. Enjoy simple activities such as popcorn, hot cocoa, and a Christmas classic movie.

* Take advantage of gift card sales. Many places will either have gift card discounts or offer a buy a $25 GC get a $10 GC free. That is FREE money and two gifts for the price of one!

* Plan a family trip! Agree to cut back on gifts for the family and instead plan a local weekend getaway or something more exotic. We started doing this a couple years ago and we are truly making memories to last a life time……how many can say that about the slippers you received last year.
