I am always looking for a reason to get together with the girls, my crew and I have been friends for years! We originally met through the local MOMS club but now that all of our kids are getting older, we have swapped out our strollers and sippy cups for cocktails and game night!
When I saw that Downton Abbey was coming out on DVD, I just new this was our next adventure together. We had mention in past get togethers how we were all fans of the series Downton Abbey from a few years back. Now that the new movie has come out on DVD, I couldn’t wait to get the girls together and watch it! If you were a follower of the show, then you will be thrilled to learn, that this DVD is an expansion from the original series and they got all the characters that you love back together on this movie!

After a 6 series run, that revolved around the Crawley family’s country estate, the drama chronicled the lives of the family and their servants from the turn of the 20th century through sweeping societal changes, including World War I and the Roaring ’20s. Now the Crawleys are back and have pretty much pick up where the series left off in terms of relationships, bickering, health status, and more. Mary is still happily married to Henry and is taking a bigger role in running Downton, stepping it up when it comes to overseeing this grand, mysterious event at the heart of the film.
Since the girls and I try to get together once a month, some of our requirements are:
Fun – CHECK
No drama – CHECK
Hassle free – CHECK
Easy – CHECK
And frugal – CHECK
I think all of these are essential to having a fun and relaxing time!
Now who is ready to throw a “hassle free” Downton Abbey party?
So, first and foremost, you need to head on over to Walmart or Walmart.com and secure your own copy of Downton Abbey. Walmart is a great place to party shop, as they meet many of my requirements from above. Walmart is hassle-free, easy to shop and get everything on your like in one stop, AND frugal! Walmart will help you save on everything on your list.
If you are a parent to a bunch of little mess makers like me, when it’s time to get with your girlfriends, the last thing you want to do is cook and clean….. so step #1 , if your kids are of cleaning age, make them clean up their mess….and have them throw in a load of dishes and vacuum while their are at it. There… cleaning DONE! Heehee!
Next, bring on the food…..ALL THE FOOD, in fact carb overload is a perfect treat for this British movie! While shopping you should be looking for crumpets, croissants, shortbread cookies or scones. I found a deliciously delicate cinnamon bundt cake, cute and no baking “SCORE”. To that, I added a few croissants and cookies. To balance out all of those carbs, we need a little protein and you can’t go wrong with a Charcuterie board.
are perfect for entertaining. Also known as cheese boards, they’re usually made a variety of cheeses, meats, nuts, fruits, crackers and jams. The great thing about these, they are a crowd pleaser, easy, FOOL PROOF, you can’t mess this up, even if you try and they are as frugal as you want them to be. My platter was under $20 and required no cooking, little creativity and filled up the crowd.
One of the final necessities for a Downton Abby party is tea! Yes, it’s a must! If you are not a tea fan, I have a great recipe for the best slightly sweet and flavorful tea.
Best Tea Recipe
1/2 c sugar
1/2 cup water
1/4 cup of mulling spice
2 teaspoons of vanilla
8 Earl Grey or Chamomile tea bags
In a saucepan, bring sugar and water to a simmer, then turn temperature down to low.
Add spice and vanilla to sugar mixture and let meld together for about 45 minutes.
remove/strain all spices and add 6 cups of water. Heat to a sipping temperature
Pour over teabag in a tea kettle, wait 10 minutes and serve
There you have it! A simple, easy, hassle free way to get together with your friends for a “hassle free” Downton Abbey party. Your friends will love the night out and you won’t be exhausted from shopping, cooking and planning. If you want to kick it up a notch, you can ask all of you guest to sport their best hair pieces, hats and pearls for a more festive touch.
