Is your furnace running? You better go catch it!

Lame jokes aside, we need to talk about how quickly winter is approaching and what we need to do to prepare. I’ve posted about this before, but it is such an important topic that it requires a few posts just to cover everything. If you use a furnace in your home, have you had a tune-up done on it recently? If not, please make that phone call and get it done! There is nothing worse during the winter than having your heating system go out during the coldest time of the year. Learn more

After you have made sure that your heating system is ready for the cold weather, check out the rest of your house. A really important tip that I cannot stress about enough is to check your roof. We often forget that if our roof is messed up in any way or needs repair, snow may leak through into our homes! If you have any damaged or missing shingles, do your best to take care of that as soon as possible.

Make sure you also seal your air ducts. This helps to prevent cold air from coming in and letting the heat escape. Even if you plan on staying out of the house as much as possible during the winter, whether it is to enjoy the winter weather or avoid the winter maintenance of your home, these repairs and small jobs should really be taken care of. If you want to avoid the repairs a little longer, think of looking into the best external cladding panels to winterizing your home.

If you have a chimney, consider installing a chimney balloon. This will prevent chimney drafts. Older Victorian homes usually have a chimney in almost every room. Think about all of the cold air that can make it inside of your home causing your heating system to work even harder at keeping your home warm! That will make your electric bill skyrocket. What tips do you have for other people out there that need to prepare their home for the cold weather? What have you tried that works and does not work?
