October is National Fire Prevention Month!

Of course nobody wants to talk about what could be the worst day of your life, but prevention is key. When we don’t talk, plan, prepare, ask and answer questions we leave a lot of room for the unknown and disaster to fill in. This is why October is National Fire Prevention Month!

We have been given this time as a community to open the door of conversation. October is the time to stop and prepare, not only for your home but your family. NFPA stats show that in 2017 U.S. fire departments responded to 357,000 home structure fires and this hits very close to home for our household.

My husband is a fire Captain and I hear first hand of the tragedies he see’s and how easily some of these could have been prevented. In fact, did you know roughly 3 out of 5 fire fatalities occur in homes with no smoke alarms and if they did, they didn’t work. He has seen this far too often, and it’s so sad to see how this affects people, pets and property.

I am sure most of us know we need to make a plan, check our alarms or talk to our children but don’t really know where to start….. don’t be ashamed, it’s a very overwhelming topic and most people don’t even know where to start. A good place to start is the Kidde Fire Safety Protect Every Moment page, here you will find ALL the products you need for your home, and you will be able to compare products so you can get what exactly what your home needs.

I was surprised to learn that cooking equipment is the top cause of home fires, followed by heating equipment…. something that could effect us all. Being prepared with working smoke alarms and fire extinguisher in the kitchen can help you with an emergency at a moments notice. Use this month to take it a step further and double check that your dryer vent is not clogged and that all items are moved away from the furnace.

When I look at what’s important to me, Ii’ll do whatever it takes to protect what matters… my family. Fortunately for fire safety, it only takes a moment to plan and prepare. Talk with your family, act out an emergency, time yourself and see how long it takes for the family to get to your meeting spot. Talk about the plan for pets, young children and any elders in the house. A meeting spot is a VERY important topic. This will help firefighters to know if there is anyone left in the house. Test all of your Kidde smoke alarms and make sure they are in good working order. If they are older, you may want to consider upgrading. Take the time today to protect your home and family with Kidde’s Fire Safety essentials, available at The Home Depot or Walmart.

To help open the conversation with family, I have created a handy check list to help you get started.

For the kids – I have created a fun and exciting firefighter workbook to help open the conversation in a less scary way. As you work your way through the workbook, you can open the conversation on the family plan in the event of a fire in the home and general fire prevention and safety, like not playing with matches/lighters.
