There is nothing quite like classic Portland Broadway musicals! They feeling of familiarity from either seeing them around the country, knowing the songs by heart or performing in the play in high school. These classic musicals become part of our memory and history. 

The original Broadway production of Fiddler on the Roof, which opened in 1964, was the first musical in history to surpass 3,000 performances. The show won the 1965 Tony Award for Best Musical in addition to eight other Tony Awards that year. This acclaimed revival proudly introduces a new generation to the iconic musical adored across the globe.

Fiddler on the roof is the first Portland Broadway Musical of the year. This show takes you on a journey back, long ago into a Jewish community set in a pre-revolutionary Russian village. They weight of the world is on the shoulders of a poor milkman YEHEZKEL LAZAROV (Tevye) who has the responsibility to find good husbands for his five daughters. Back in the day there was no “falling in love” you had to follow the tradition of finding a suitable mate through the help of a “matchmaker”.  After he consults the traditional matchmaker and also has a word with God, he decided to go againts the tradition and allow his daughter to follow her heart and let love play a role in her decision to marry.

It is authentic and entertaining to the soul.  You will hear favorites like “Matchmaker, Matchmaker” and “If I Were A Rich Man” – Side note, I will save you the anguish of trying to remember where else you have year that tune….. Fiddler on the Roof has scenic design by Michael Yeargan (Tony Award®-nominee, The King and I), costume design by Catherine Zuber (Tony Award®-winner, The King and I), lighting design by Donald Holder (Tony Award®-nominee, The King and I), sound design by Scott Lehrer (Tony Award®-winner, South Pacific), and hair and wig design by Tom Watson.
